Geelong Regional Libraries is honoured to support the historic work of the Victorian Treaty Advancement Commission by hosting a polling station for the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria election at the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre.
The polling station will be located on the ground floor of the Geelong Library & Heritage Centre and will be open for voting from 30 September – 11 October.
During this period, some areas of the ground floor level will not be available for general public use. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and thank you for your understanding.
What is the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria?
The First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria will be the voice for Aboriginal communities in the next phase of a Treaty process. It will be a powerful, independent and culturally strong organisation made up of people who have Traditional connections in Victoria (Victorian Traditional Owners).
The Aboriginal community will decide who is on the Assembly through the election process.
Victorian Traditional Owners and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in Victoria are eligible to vote.
The Assembly will work alongside government to set up:
• The Treaty Authority – an independent umpire through the Treaty process • The Treaty Negotiating Framework – which will set out how Treaties can be agreed in Victoria • A Self-Determination Fund – so community can be on a level playing field with government.
